Book To Save a King (True Blue Royal Book 2) Review :

I really like Rachel Hauck and I am so glad I read The Memory House prior to this one. If I had read this first, I would not have read any more of her novels. While I like the use of the wedding dress to represent the gospel, and I have no problem with angels, even the Lord Himself appearing in the novel, the overall story and characters were just too smaltzy for me. This author is capable of so much more. I haven't yet read Gus and Daffy's story--have it on hold from the library--but not sure I'll read it. The editing and proofreading lapses were beyond distracting. Annoying, frankly. I am a former English teacher, so more sensitive to that than others may be; nevertheless, for a published work, hard to excuse the lapses. Don't give up on this author, she has moments of greatness--just not in this novel.
Having read many Rachel Hauck books, I shouldn't have been surprised when this one morphed into another 'suspend your belief in reality' sort of fairy-tale for adults. The story was sweet, even though it sounded a great deal like a "recent event in English history" that was recycled with the addition of pseudo religious elements. The "fairy-tale/fairy-godmother/magic wedding dress/magic feathers" writing didn't show up in the story until about half-way through, but then played a major role to the end. I halfway expected the fairy-godmother to begin singing "Bibbidi- bobbidi-boo"( from the Disney animated version of Cinderella) at some point. Then there was the elusive and other-worldly (Heavenly) character, "Emmanuel", who evidently appeared at various times to chat with, and give advice to, mere mortals. Then the swan feathers appeared mysteriously. How could they identify them as swan feathers, rather than white duck feathers or white chicken feathers? No clue, but not really important, considering all of the other fairy-tale elements in the story. Even the main character's name, "Gemma Stone", was a tad cheesy. All in all, the completely unrealistic portions of the story detracted from my star-rating of the book as a whole. I enjoyed it, but knew what I was reading was completely implausible fluff. On the other hand, maybe a romantic fairy-tale with a HEA ending is what we need these days? I've read some reviews that said the first book of this series is better than this one, so I may give Book#1 a try.
