Vic and Jacob are at it again, this time as professional partners as they hunt down the source of a new and deadly street drug called Kick. Along side them in the hunt are two familiar faces, Carolyn(I cannot tell a lie) and Zig. There’s a lot of whodunnit mixed with tons of action. This is another cat and mouse where I thought I knew where the cheese was hiding but as usual I ended up with egg on my face. Everyone was suspicious as far as I was concerned. Little did I know.What I really loved about this book was how far Vic has come as an investigator. I think it was apparent to everyone but him. But he also didn’t lose one bit of his awkward charm. And the love between him and Jacob had my heart going pitter patter and rat a tat tat. Loved it! Then we get some cameo appearances from Crash and Red which had me humming the gangs all here. There was a moment that tore at me, rather a series of related moments when we are revisited by a familiar spirit. Oh, my heart! I had to put the book down. Literally. Couldn’t take it. The tenderness of that moment. GAH.Ok, I’m rambling but can’t help myself. So many moments, so much good stuff. Oh, and the ending. OMG. The last page. WHAT.THE.FUDGE?! There will be another book. Oh yes. There will. Of course this is 5 stars!I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader Copy.(And I also bought the ebook, gotta support my fave authors!) I wish I hadn't started this when I had so much going on because I really would have loved plowing through it beginning to end. If I didn't know the audio would be released soon, I'd probably plunge right back in and re-read it.One of my favorite parts of this series is the character growth, so often when a series has been going for a while that dies off, but not here. I love that the last book was all about Vic and Jacob longing for each other and their life together. This book was all about how that life has expanded in ways they probably didn't expect, but that works just as well. Seeing how much they mean to each other, how much they are willing to do for each other, and how those feelings keep getting stronger with time is fantastic. Keeping the storylines fresh and exciting (and wow, that was some edge of the seat ending) while also strengthening the characters and their connections to each other is masterful, and not something long-term series tend to do well.I am looking forward to the audio and dying for the next book!
