Book Wild Wind: A Chaos Novella Review :

It hurts to give a low rating to a KA story. She has created such interesting worlds, with many characters i love. Wish I could include this novella in that assessment, but I cannot. The H--Jagger is fairly true to the character introduced in previous stories. He's alpha, a biker, but certainly evolved compared to the previous MC brotherhood. His character is written to be weighed down by a fuzzily defined "burden" regarding the father he lost when he was under 5 yrs old. I had a hard time understanding this. Not to minimize the loss of a parent...but it wasn't clear why or how his character was defined by this. It was treated sort of as a mystery, and sort of like something he needed to seek out. Yet he was surrounded by loved ones who would have answered his simplest questions in a nanosecond. This plot device clouded an understanding of his motivations and drive. It just didn't make alot of sense. The h--where do I start? She's much younger than a typical KA heroine, which is ok, just not her norm. The character's issues stem from a massive overload of cultural/societal/generationally-related tropes. Stay with me here. Her name is Archie, so that's gender neutral, which is adorable. She's also written with a truckload of attributes that seem to be pulled directly from a list of what may be considered 20-something cool. Example--she dresses in a cultural mishmash of items. That's great, but every time her outfits are described, it's written in such an over-the-top manner, like it's a fantastic accomplishment. She owns the hippest, coolest, most Instagram worthy store ever, full or vintage/ironic/super cool stuff that she's on everyone's radar. She travels by tent/hostel/backpack to stereotypical places. She takes care of latchkey teens. She's written as a virtual list of attributes you would expect for a stereotyped young woman from a major city. She's not believable as an h, because she's an endless supply of commercially viable tropes. So it was very hard to take this character seriously, because she wasn't a character, but a list. The plot--this got pretty muddy, too. There was the tension between the h and her outlandish brother, a spoiled d#$k with delusions of grandeur. There was the issue with one of the teens and some damaged bullies that somehow ended up involving grown MC men getting physically involved in an altercation--again way over-the-top and pretty cringe worthy. And last, the heavy, fuzzy, undefined issues with the H and a lack of memories about his dead father. It was a struggle getting through this, and it still seemed like an overwrought tale. It was also a missed opportunity to write more realistically about a man who was simply struggling with finding his place in the world. That would have been interesting to read. The last disappointing thing about this story is the sex. KA used to be awesome at the sex scenes. They were hot, really great at sharing the true connections between characters. This story, like the last MC book, Still Standing, includes this very odd, disjointed, porn style sex that just isn't hot. There's no real connection between the participants. They're performing sex acts, but I'm not getting the sense they're really there and enjoying. They're just performing. There's no real heat. And it's very male viewpoint as well. The patriarchy rules in the bedroom--without the real connections, the real feelings, it's no better than porn.I'd love to read about characters that I can love. This new direction KA is taking, with less realistic characters, disappointing plots, sad sex, and an overload of stereotypes is not working for this reader.
Unfortunately, another KA book that falls flat fir me. Maybe it’s the series that I’m over, or maybe it’s the Chaos G2 that I’m not into Dutch and Jagger. Great reading, enjoyable to a point, but definitely not a book I plan on rereading multiple times.
